Taste-Safe Sensory Dirt

My child is big into eating everything, so we made some taste safe (but not suggested to eat) dirt. We got messy, but we had so much fun. This activity has kept his attention for about 10-15 minutes at a time.

Table of Contents

Recipe

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/8 cup oil

Mix the dry ingredients together (I mixed them in the sensory bin to save on clean-up). Once mixed add in the oil, whatever kind you have available such as, coconut, olive, vegetable, etc. Mix until well combined. You can kneed it with your hands to determine if you need more oil, the dough should stick together when packed and crumble apart. These measurements are lose depending on how much you need for your sensory bin. I added more flour and went off of texture to know when I had enough oil. The cocoa powder gives you the dirt look so add as needed.

*This is a taste safe ingredient list, but keep in mind that uncooked flour is not safe to eat. I watched my child to make sure he wasn’t eating the dough and we washed our hands when finished.

Play Materials

I picked up some measuring spoons at dollar tree and put a few trucks from around the house in the bin. The scoops made some great rock like shapes to put into the dump truck.

We did get messy with this activity. I put a beach towel down under the sensory bin and made for easy clean up. My little guy loved the mess part of it and I let him do his thing on the towel and in the bin.

There are many different variations of the is activity that could be done. Dirt is a great foundation for a garden experience, flower garden, construction site, and so many more. Just follow your child’s interest with this one.

I hope you and your little enjoy this fun and engaging taste-safe sensory dirt experience. How long did your little one stay interested in this activity?
